In the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Tumut lies in the tranquil Tumut Valley. The surrounding high country is spectacular and was the inspiration for Banjo Paterson's "The Man from Snowy River".

Sports/Adventure

For those of you into sports and adventure, there are some great things to do:

• Ultra light flying or hang gliding with Air Escape (Open 7 days. Phone Peter Wilson on 02 6947 1159 or 0418 278 012)
• Mountain bike riding
• Various water sports including swimming, fishing, water skiing, rafting, recreational boating and canoeing or kayaking down the Tumut and Goobragandra Rivers.
• Golfing – Tumut district has 5 golf courses each with their own unique mountain setting. Tumut’s 18 hole golf course is challenging and will test anyone’s handicap. Courses are also located at Talbingo, Gundagai, Adelong and Tumbarumba.

Main Tourist Attractions

Tumut main tourist attractions must be seen if you are spending some time here.

Apples and stone fruit can be purchased from fruit stalls and orchards when in season.

Take one of many scenic drives and visit the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. Tumut 3 Power Station is Australia’s largest hydro power station. View the massive pipelines, the impressive Talbingo Dam and Jounama Pondage.

Yarrangobilly Caves are some of the most beautiful and ornate caves in Australia. Take a guided or self guided cave tour (open 7 days). Also enjoy the thermal pool (a pleasant 27 degrees), perfect for soothing aches and pains as well as picnic and BBQ facilities, walks and fishing. For further information phone 02 6454 9597.

The famous Adelong Falls with its rich gold mining past, is an ideal spot to have a leisurely picnic or BBQ, take advantage of the swimming hole or explore the unique surrounding area.

Blowering Dam is where Ken Warby set the world water speed record. Here you can go water skiing, windsurfing, fishing, rafting, canoeing, sailing or recreational boating.

Kosciusko National Park is 690,000 hectares of diverse natural landscape. Bushwalking, mountain bike riding, picnicking, fishing, caving, car touring, canoeing, and horse riding are just some of the activities enjoyed in the area.

Festivals/Events

Festivals held in and around Tumut provide fun for the whole family:
• Talbingo- Jounama Fishing Classic in October
• Tumut Campdraft in January/February
• Falling Leaf Festival Tumut, held the last week in April
celebrating Parks and Gardens of the High Country
• The Adelong Antique Fair in April
• The Batlow Apple Blossom Festival in late October.

Trails / Wildlife / Nature

For nature lovers and lovers of walks through the area's flora and fauna, there are some great places to see.

Visit the magnificent Buddong Falls (Kosciusko NP), Adelong Falls (Adelong), Yarrangobilly Caves (Kosciusko NP), the Sugar Pine Walk (Batlow’s magnificent stand of sugar pines, one of the largest and most valuable timber trees of North America) and Pilot Hill Forest Park and Aboretum (over 40 species of conifers and hardwood from worldwide, which were planted from the early 1920’s).

You will also see emus and kangaroos roaming wild in their natural habitat around Blowering Dam.

The northern end of Kosciusko National Park has a large variety of walking tracks that will take you past crystal clear streams and rivers, mountain gorges, open high country plains and breathtaking bush.

Tourist Drive 5 takes you through Tumut, Kiandra, Cabramurra, Khancoban, Tumbarumba, Batlow and Adelong. The 298km round trip is just one of the many beautiful scenic drives in the region.

The Hume & Hovell Walking Track follows the route taken through southern NSW by Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824-25. The Tumut region contains some of the most scenic country of that traverse.

Blowering Cliffs Walk is another scenic option. It is an approx 5km return trip from the Log Creek Bridge to Blowering Falls.

Historical Sites

Visit the Cabramurra Lookout. The original township of Cabramurra, Australia’s highest town (1488m ASL) was constructed to house Snowy Mountains Scheme workers and their families during the 1950’s and 60’s.

Kiandra is the birthplace of skiing in Australia with a rich gold mining past. Take a walk along the Heritage trail, steeped in history with the Kiandra Pioneer Cemetery, Pioneer Huts and Stamper Battery.
